The Prisoner Of Second Avenue is an American black
comedy play by Neil Simon, written in 1971.
It ran on Broadway from November 1971 until
September 1973, with Peter Falk and Lee Grant as Mel
and Edna Edison, a troubled middle-aged couple. The
play was nominated for a 1972 Tony Award for Best
Play.
The film version of The Prisoner Of Second Avenue
was released in 1975 and starred Jack Lemmon and
Anne Bancroft as the troubled couple. It was
produced and directed by Melvin Frank from a
screenplay by Neil Simon, with music by Marvin
Hamlisch.
The West End premiere of this play in London in
1999, starred Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason, who
was once married to Neil Simon, making their British
stage debuts. It is as relevent today as it
was in the 1970s.
The story revolves around the escalating problems of
a middle-aged couple living on Second Avenue on the
Upper East Side of New York City.
Mel Edison, the main character, has just lost his
job after many years and now has to cope with being
unemployed at middle-age.
The action occurs during an intense summer heat wave
and a prolonged garbage strike, which just
exacerbates Edison's plight to no end as he and his
wife Edna deal with noisy neighbors, loud sounds
emanating from Manhattan streets and even a robbery
of their apartment during broad daylight.
Mel eventually suffers a nervous breakdown and it is
up to the loving care of his brother, sisters and
Edna to bring Mel back to a firm reality. |
