The Safari
Party

The Robin Hood Theatre
Company presents Tim Firth’s deliciously natty
social comedy. |
| |
|
Three households have agreed to hold a ‘safari
party’ - a dinner party, each course of which is
served in a different house. The hors d'oeuvres are
served by Daniel and Adam, young local lads whose
father was recently shot dead; the main course is
provided by Lol and Esther, upwardly-mobile and
vulgar, hindered by their daughter Bridget –
recently returned from working in Portugal. The
dessert is supplied by Inga, a seemingly benign
antiques dealer. The three households are linked not
just socially however, there's the whole question of
the table ... |
| |
|
As the evening progresses, the many layers of truth
about the table are revealed, some shocking, and the
play takes a slightly sinister detour, before
finally giving the audience a quirky ending. |

Tim Firth, writer of such gems as ‘Calendar Girls’,
‘Neville’s Island’, ‘Flint Street Nativity’ and
‘Kinky Boots’ wrote this play as a social commentary
on the upwardly mobile
‘get-rich-quick-and-move-to-the-country’ set.
University educated at Cambridge, an aspirant
director Sam Mendes spotted that Tim’s acting
ability fell a little short of the mark and
encouraged him to write. Sam Mendes went on to
direct all of his Cambridge plays. |
